Washer Won't Drain? Here's What's Happening
Standing water in your washing machine is frustrating. Discover the top causes of washer drainage problems and simple fixes you can try before calling for service.
Standing water in your washing machine is frustrating — and it can mean your laundry is stuck in a soggy mess. Here's what's likely happening and what you can do about it.
Check the Drain Hose First
The most common cause of drainage problems is a kinked, clogged, or improperly positioned drain hose. Pull the washer away from the wall and inspect the hose. It should have a gentle curve, not a sharp bend. The end should be inserted 6-8 inches into the standpipe — not too deep, which can cause siphoning.
Clean the Pump Filter
Front-load washers have a pump filter (usually behind a small door at the bottom front of the machine) that catches lint, coins, and small items. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of drainage problems. Clean it every 3-6 months.
Check for a Clog in the Drain Pump
Small items like socks, coins, or hairpins can get past the filter and jam the drain pump impeller. You'll often hear a humming sound when the pump tries to run but can't. This requires disassembling the pump to clear the obstruction.
Inspect the Lid Switch (Top-Load Washers)
Top-load washers won't spin or drain if the lid switch is broken. The machine thinks the lid is open and stops the cycle for safety. Test the switch with a multimeter — if it shows no continuity, it needs replacement.
Check the Control Board
On newer electronic washers, a faulty control board can prevent the drain cycle from initiating. This is less common but worth checking if other causes have been ruled out.
