Refrigerator Not Cooling? 7 Common Causes and What to Do

March 5, 20266 min readBy PDX Appliance Pros

A warm refrigerator is a kitchen emergency. Learn the most common reasons your fridge stops cooling and when to call a Portland appliance repair technician.

A warm refrigerator is one of the most stressful kitchen emergencies a Portland homeowner can face. With food at risk and the clock ticking, knowing what's happening — and what to do — can save you hundreds of dollars in spoiled groceries.

1. The Condenser Coils Are Dirty

Condenser coils release heat from the refrigerant. When they're clogged with dust and pet hair (common in Portland homes), the refrigerator can't cool efficiently. Clean them with a coil brush every 6-12 months.

2. The Evaporator Fan Is Broken

The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator compartment. If it fails, the fridge warms up while the freezer stays cold. You'll often hear unusual noises or silence when the fan should be running.

3. The Door Gasket Is Damaged

A worn or cracked door seal lets warm air in constantly, forcing the compressor to work overtime. Check your gasket by closing the door on a piece of paper — if it slides out easily, the seal needs replacement.

4. The Defrost System Has Failed

Most modern refrigerators have automatic defrost systems. When the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer fails, ice builds up on the evaporator coils and blocks airflow. You'll notice frost buildup in the freezer and a warm refrigerator.

5. The Start Relay Is Faulty

The start relay helps the compressor start. A failed relay means the compressor won't run, and the refrigerator won't cool at all. Shake the relay — if it rattles, it's likely failed.

6. The Thermistor Is Defective

The thermistor monitors the temperature and signals the control board to run the compressor and fans. A faulty thermistor sends incorrect readings, causing the refrigerator to cycle incorrectly.

7. The Compressor Is Failing

The compressor is the heart of the refrigeration system. When it fails, the refrigerator stops cooling entirely. Compressor replacement is expensive — often $300-600 — so it's worth considering the age and condition of your refrigerator.
